Viral claims, health myths, and tech rumors — investigated and rated.
Can you charge a phone with a potato? The viral videos say yes, but the battery math tells a very different story — a single potato cell makes less than one volt and a fraction of a milliamp, while a phone needs a steady five volts and whole watts.
Do ear candles work to pull wax and toxins out of your ears? No — clinical tests found no suction and no wax removed, while regulators warn of burns, blockages, and perforated eardrums.
Does cheese cause nightmares? For most people, the answer is no — but a 2025 study of more than 1,000 students found a real link for people with lactose intolerance, and the reason has little to do with the cheese itself.
Does putting your phone in rice work? The famous rescue trick absorbs some moisture but is slower than open air, can shed dust into ports, and is explicitly discouraged by Apple — so the evidence calls it misleading, not a fix.
Is it bad to leave your laptop plugged in all the time? No, a modern laptop will not overcharge — but sitting at 100% for months does age the battery faster, and heat makes it worse.
Can you swallow your tongue during a seizure? No — and the well-meaning attempt to prevent it, by forcing an object into a seizing person's mouth, is one of the most dangerous first-aid mistakes a bystander can make.
Do cell phones cause brain cancer? After three decades of studies, hundreds of thousands of tracked users, and a major World Health Organization review, the evidence points one way — and it is not the way the viral warnings suggest.
Is it dangerous to hold in a sneeze? The evidence says yes, but with an important qualifier: serious injury is real yet extremely rare, and it happens when both the nose and mouth are blocked at once.
Is it safe to microwave food in plastic containers? The short answer is that it depends on the container: FDA-tested microwave-safe plastics have not been shown to cause cancer, but unlabelled, single-use, or damaged containers can leach more chemicals when heated.
Is it safe to reheat rice? Yes, but only when the rice was cooled quickly, kept cold, and reheated once until steaming hot — the real danger is the hours it spent sitting out, not the reheating itself.
Can you get sunburn on a cloudy day? Yes — up to 80% of the sun's UV rays pass through clouds, and broken cloud cover can even intensify them, so overcast skies are no excuse to skip sunscreen.
Does eating late at night cause weight gain? The short answer is no — not because of the clock itself — but controlled trials show late meals do nudge hunger, calorie burning, and blood sugar in ways that can make weight control harder.
A shot of whiskey feels warming because alcohol sends warm blood rushing to your skin. That flush is heat leaving your body, not heat being made — and in cold weather it can push your core temperature down toward hypothermia.
No, incognito mode does not make you anonymous: it only stops your own browser from saving history on your device, while your provider, employer, and the websites you visit can still see what you do. A $5 billion lawsuit showed even Google collected data in private mode.
Toads look warty, so generations of parents warned that touching one would cover your hands in warts. The bumps are defensive glands, not warts, and human warts come from a human virus, not amphibians.
The old rule about fully draining a battery before recharging comes from nickel-cadmium cells, not the lithium-ion battery in your phone. For modern phones, regular top-ups beat deep discharges.
A morning drink can make a hangover feel better for an hour or two, and that feeling is exactly the trap. The evidence says hair of the dog postpones a hangover rather than curing it — and it can quietly make the next one worse.
Polygraphs are sold as lie detectors, but a century of research says they measure stress, not deception. The evidence puts their accuracy well above chance — and well below the certainty their reputation promises.
The seven-year rule is the most repeated piece of pet math in the world, and it is wrong in both directions. Dogs race through childhood, then slow down — and a 2020 DNA study shows just how badly the old formula misses.
The famous tongue map says sweet lives at the tip, bitter at the back, and salty and sour along the sides. A century of taste science says otherwise: every part of your tongue can taste every flavour.
For decades, IT departments forced everyone to rotate passwords every 90 days. But NIST, the FTC, and security research now say scheduled password changes don't help — and can make passwords weaker.
Your mother warned you, your teacher warned you, and the internet still warns you: crack your knuckles and you'll pay with arthritis. But one man cracked only his left hand for more than 60 years, and larger studies of hundreds of adults agree with him — the habit doesn't cause arthritis.
School taught us that humans have five senses. Modern neuroscience counts many more — balance, body position, pain, temperature, and internal signals among them — and the case of a man who lost one of them proves the point.
For more than half a century, monosodium glutamate has been blamed for headaches, flushing, and 'Chinese Restaurant Syndrome.' The world's largest controlled trials say otherwise: at normal dietary levels, MSG is safe, and the symptoms don't hold up under double-blind testing.
Police in the US, UK, Canada, and Australia give the same answer: there is no 24-hour waiting period for reporting someone missing. From the crime dramas that invented the rule to the federal laws that forbid it, here is the evidence — and why the first hours matter most.
Warning signs at gas pumps say phones can ignite fuel vapors. But the Petroleum Equipment Institute has never documented a single fire caused by a cell phone — the real danger is static electricity. We trace the myth to a 1999 email hoax and check what the science actually says.
You've heard it: water drains counterclockwise in the Northern Hemisphere and clockwise in the Southern. Physicists say it's nonsense for any real sink or tub — yet a Kenyan roadside trick, a famous MIT experiment, and one 1995 cartoon episode keep the myth alive. Here's the evidence.
Generations of schoolchildren learned that a camel's hump is a water tank. But dissections, metabolic studies, and desert fieldwork all say otherwise: the hump is a mound of fat. We trace where the myth came from, what's really inside, and how camels actually go weeks without a drink.
For decades we've been told 40 to 80 percent of body heat escapes through your head. The real figure is 7 to 10 percent — the head's share of skin. The claim traces to a 1950s military experiment whose volunteers wore Arctic survival suits with bare heads.
Your parents warned that reading in dim light would ruin your eyes. Ophthalmologists, a famous 2007 British Medical Journal myth-busting paper, and decades of research all say otherwise — though the strain you feel is entirely real.
For decades we were told lemmings march off cliffs in collective suicide. The real story: a staged 1958 Disney documentary, a turntable, and a river in Alberta — while real lemmings swim, burrow, and stubbornly stay alive.
Millions of users still right-click 'Safely Remove Hardware' before every unplug — but since Windows 10 version 1809, Microsoft made 'Quick Removal' the default. We checked the evidence, Microsoft's own documentation, and exactly when ejecting still matters.
The left-brain/right-brain personality divide is one of psychology's most viral myths. A landmark 2013 study of 1,011 brain scans found no evidence that anyone's brain favors one side — here is what the science actually says.
The legend that a penny dropped from a skyscraper could kill a pedestrian is one of the most durable myths in popular physics. Wind-tunnel tests, television experiments, and computer simulations all reach the same verdict: air resistance robs the coin of nearly all its danger.
Every November, turkey gets blamed for the post-Thanksgiving nap — supposedly because of the amino acid tryptophan. Scientists and USDA nutrient data say the bird is innocent: it holds no tryptophan advantage over chicken, and you would need roughly twenty servings to feel a sedative effect.
The advice to feed a cold and starve a fever dates to a 1574 dictionary and the long-dead theory of bodily humors. Modern physicians, immunologists, and the only studies ever run on the question all point to a different answer: feed them both, and hydrate above all.
The FBI, the FCC, and the TSA have all warned that public USB charging stations can hack your phone. But after fifteen years of warnings, nobody can point to a single victim — ProofNews examines the evidence.
The 1992 book 'Sharks Don't Get Cancer' launched a supplement empire that ended in a $1 million FTC fine. But tumor registries document dozens of cancers in sharks — including tumors growing in shark cartilage itself.
The warning is as old as childhood itself: don't touch that baby bird, or its mother will smell you and abandon it. Ornithologists, wildlife rehabilitators, and decades of observation say otherwise — here is what the science actually shows, and what to do when you find a chick on the ground.
Since the late 1960s, an urban legend has claimed Walt Disney's body — or just his head — was cryogenically frozen after his death in 1966. The death certificate, the cremation records, and even the cryonics pioneer who supposedly froze him all tell the same story.
The claim that every drink kills brain cells is one of the most repeated health warnings in the world. Researchers who actually counted neurons in the brains of heavy drinkers found something surprising — and the real damage alcohol does is different from the myth.
They say honey never expires — that archaeologists found 3,000-year-old honey in Egyptian tombs and it was still edible. The food science behind the claim is real, but the word 'never' comes with fine print.
Smart TVs do track what you watch using screen-scanning technology called ACR — and regulators have fined companies for doing it without consent. But the creepiest versions of this claim need a closer look.
Parents have warned for generations that swallowing chewing gum traps it in your stomach for seven years. Gastroenterologists, endoscopy results, and the basic mechanics of digestion say otherwise.
The poolside rule everyone heard as a child is more than a century old, but the American Red Cross's own scientific review found no evidence that eating before swimming raises drowning risk. Here is what the evidence actually says.
The Mpemba effect claims hot water can freeze faster than cold — an idea traced from Aristotle to a Tanzanian schoolboy in 1963. We review the experiments, from a 28-for-28 replication to Cambridge's 2016 debunking, to separate the laboratory reality from the viral legend.
One of history's most repeated motivational claims says Albert Einstein flunked mathematics as a boy. His school records, his own words, and the archives all tell a very different story.
Tech advice sites have warned for years that fast charging eats your phone's battery alive. A six-month test running 40 phones through 500 charge cycles points to a surprising answer: the watts are not the problem — heat is.
The internet's favorite roast of American bureaucracy says NASA wasted millions developing a pen for zero gravity while the Soviets simply used pencils. The real story — a private inventor, a $2.95 purchase order, and cosmonauts who bought the same pen — is far more interesting.
Grandmothers everywhere insist that wet hair or cold weather will give you a cold. Doctors say only viruses cause colds — but new research shows cold air genuinely weakens your nose's defenses. We sort the myth from the kernel of truth.
Switch to dark mode and your battery will last longer — tech advice repeated for years across blogs, videos, and tips lists. Measurements from Google's engineers and Purdue researchers show the claim is real, but only on certain screens, and far smaller than most people expect.
When a giant oarfish washes ashore, headlines immediately ask whether an earthquake is on the way. Japanese folklore says yes. ProofNews dug into the 83-year scientific record — and the answer is clear.
The story goes that centuries-old windowpanes are thicker at the bottom because glass flows like a slow liquid. Materials scientists at Corning and the Corning Museum of Glass say otherwise — the thickness is a fingerprint of how the glass was made.
Bottled water outsells almost every other drink on Earth, powered by the belief that it is purer and safer than tap water. Decades of testing, regulation records, and plastic research tell a different story.
QR codes feel safe — they're everywhere, from parking meters to restaurant tables. But scammers are pasting fake codes over real ones, and the FTC and FBI both say quishing is one of the fastest-growing scams in the world. We investigated the evidence.
It sounds like poetic justice — a dirty lump of coal squeezed into a glittering diamond. But geologists say it never happened. ProofNews traces the myth to its source, examines diamonds dated to 3.5 billion years old, and explains where the carbon in your ring actually came from.
The '8x8' hydration rule is repeated everywhere — but scientists cannot find where it came from. We trace its murky origin and check what kidney experts actually recommend.
The claim that China's Great Wall is visible from the lunar surface has circulated for decades. We trace its origin, check what astronauts actually saw, and run the numbers.

From the landmark Nambour trial in Australia to official dermatology guidance, we examine the randomized-trial evidence that daily sunscreen cuts skin cancer and slows skin aging — and the viral claims that it doesn't.
A viral claim says microwaving food nukes its nutrition. But studies comparing cooking methods tell a very different story — and nutrition experts at Harvard have a clear answer.
From packed emergency rooms to late-night crime waves, the full moon gets blamed for a lot. We reviewed decades of studies on sleep, crime, births, and hospital admissions to separate the moon's real effects from its folklore.
The claim that dark chocolate protects the heart has been repeated for decades — and a 21,000-person trial did find a 27% drop in cardiovascular death. But the fine print on dose, calories, processing, and heavy metals changes the picture.
Viral posts warn that 5G towers cause cancer, infertility and a host of illnesses. We examined the WHO reviews, the international safety limits and the real-world measurements — and the evidence does not back the scare stories.
The 10-percent myth has sold self-help books, inspired blockbuster movies, and fooled generations of motivational speakers. We trace its century-old origins and check what brain scans, lesion studies, and neuroscientists actually say.
Wellness brands promise a fast 'reset' that flushes toxins, but the physiology and the research tell a different story. We checked the evidence — and the hidden risks.
The 10,000-step rule began life as a 1965 Japanese pedometer advertisement, not a medical finding. Six decades of research later, cohort studies and meta-analyses say the health payoff starts far lower — and levels off well before ten thousand.
Tech CEOs keep predicting that AI will soon write essentially all code — and hiring for junior developers is already drying up. But employment projections point the other way, productivity experiments show AI's gains are far from automatic, and the boldest predictors quietly admit they still need just as many engineers.
Influencers call seed oils 'toxic sludge' driving obesity and chronic disease. We checked the claim against clinical trials, cohort studies, and a major 2026 review — and found the evidence points elsewhere.
Posts declaring 'cash is disappearing' and 'will soon be gone completely' are everywhere online. We checked the viral claim against central-bank data, payment surveys, and the laws now being passed to protect cash — and found a story much stranger than a simple obituary.
Every night, millions of us plug in our phones and walk away. The claim says the habit destroys batteries. Modern phones are far smarter than the old warnings suggest — but the science shows there is still a real, measurable cost.
For decades, travelers were told that booking flights on a Tuesday unlocks the cheapest fares. We dug through the latest airline pricing research — from Expedia, Google, CheapAir, and Hopper — to check whether the old rule still holds in 2026.
It is one of astronomy's most stubborn misunderstandings: because we always see the same lunar face, many people conclude the Moon never turns. It does — exactly once every 27.3 days. We unpack synchronous rotation, tidal locking, and why the 'motionless Moon' fails.
The claim that flu vaccines cause influenza is one of medicine's most persistent myths. We trace how flu vaccines are made, why the shot can leave you achy, and what the two-week window explains — and the evidence lands on one clear answer.
A persistent claim says HTTPS made VPNs pointless on public Wi-Fi. We checked the research, a seven-year prison sentence, and what the FTC still says — and the answer is messier than the slogans.
The carrot–eyesight claim began as a British cover story for secret radar in World War II. We trace the myth's origins and check what vitamin A really does for vision.
The famous slogan traces to cereal advertising, not science. We trace its history from a Michigan sanitarium to a 1944 ad campaign, and weigh what trials and observational studies say as of August 2026.
Viral WhatsApp forwards claim a missed call from a strange number lets hackers clone your phone and steal your contacts in seconds. We traced the claim's origins, the real 'Wangiri' one-ring scam behind it, and the one historical case in which a missed call genuinely did install spyware.
Millions have watched videos claiming a tablespoon of apple cider vinegar in water each morning 'melts belly fat.' We dug into the clinical trials — including one famous study that was retracted — and asked doctors and dietitians what the evidence actually supports.
Millions open a private window expecting invisibility. We checked the research, a $5 billion lawsuit against Google, and what Mozilla and the EFF say — incognito hides your tracks from people who share your device, and almost nobody else.
The three-second goldfish memory is one of the most repeated claims in all of animal trivia — and one of the most thoroughly wrong. We trace the evidence, from a 1994 Plymouth lever-pressing experiment to MythBusters, that shows goldfish remember for months.
The warning that knuckle cracking causes arthritis is one of the most persistent health myths of all time. We walk through the science of what that pop actually is, the doctor who cracked one hand for six decades, and the X-ray studies that settled the question.

Viral videos of burning EVs suggest battery cars are fire traps. But fire-incident data from the U.S., Sweden, Poland, and Australia shows gasoline cars catch fire at far higher rates — while EV fires, though harder to extinguish, are dramatically rarer.
It is one of grooming's most stubborn beliefs: shave, and your hair comes back thicker, darker, and faster. We trace the experiments that tested the claim — from a 1928 beard-shaving trial to modern dermatology — and explain why the science and your bathroom mirror tell different stories.
Scientists at Rutgers, Clemson, and Aston University have all tested whether food picked up within five seconds is safe to eat. The answer from thousands of laboratory measurements: bacteria can transfer in under a second, and no dropped-food sample came back clean.
Sellers promise that blue-light-blocking glasses shield eyes from screen damage, ease strain, and improve sleep. A 2023 Cochrane review of 17 trials and the American Academy of Ophthalmology's own guidance say otherwise.
Wellness influencers say aluminum in antiperspirants causes breast cancer and Alzheimer's, and that 'natural' deodorants are safer. We review decades of research — and the uncomfortable facts about natural formulas themselves.
The internet swears vitamin D pills ward off colds, flu, and every winter sniffle — and the idea feels scientific. We reviewed the randomized trials, including a 2025 meta-analysis of 40 trials and 61,589 participants, to see what the gold-standard evidence actually says.
Phone makers love flashing 108MP and 200MP camera specs, but the claim that more megapixels equal a better camera is misleading. Sensor size, pixel pitch, lens quality, and processing matter far more — though megapixels do have their place.
A decade-spanning claim says airplane contrails are secret chemical spraying programs. We examined the atmospheric science, the landmark 2016 survey of 77 experts, the history of the theory, and the separate, publicly debated geoengineering research that gets confused with it.
Nearly five decades of research have probed whether living near high-voltage power lines causes cancer, especially childhood leukemia. We reviewed the epidemiology, the physics of the fields involved, and what the world's health agencies actually conclude.
The idea that a red cape drives a bull into a fury is one of the world's oldest animal myths. Bovine vision science, arena experiments, and bullfighting history all point to the real trigger: movement, not color.
Millions swallow a daily multivitamin as cheap insurance for a longer, healthier life. But three decades of trials — including studies of nearly 400,000 people — say the pill delivers no extra years, with only narrow exceptions.
For fifty years, parents have sworn that birthday cake turns calm children into whirling dervishes. We trace the myth from a 1970s allergy diet to the gold-standard trials and the JAMA meta-analysis that found no effect — and explain why the illusion is so convincing.
The claim that a mobile phone signal can bring down an airliner has survived three decades with almost no evidence behind it. We traced the rule from a 1961 FM radio ban through the FCC's 1991 crackdown to the 5G scare — and the truth about why you still switch it on.
The old saying insists lightning never strikes the same place twice. Physics, storm records, and one very unlucky park ranger say otherwise.
For nearly 60 years, monosodium glutamate has carried a reputation as a dangerous toxin that causes headaches and heart palpitations. We traced the claim from its 1968 origins through decades of research to the verdicts of the FDA, EFSA and WHO — and the evidence tells a very different story.
Coffee does not stunt your growth, and it does not dehydrate you — but each myth has a grain of truth worth understanding. We trace where both ideas came from and what the research actually shows.
From a misread Reddit answer to magnets sticking to arms on camera, the claim that vaccines implant tracking chips spread to millions. We traced its origins, tested the physics, and checked what's actually in the vial.
The claim that Apollo 11 was staged in a film studio refuses to die — but the retroreflectors left on the Moon still answer lasers, orbiters keep photographing the landing sites, and even the Soviet Union never disputed the landings. ProofNews weighs the evidence.
From bulletproof coffee to wellness TikTok, coconut oil has been sold as a heart-healthy superfood for a decade. We reviewed the clinical trials, the meta-analyses, and the cardiology guidelines to see what the science actually supports — and the verdict is not flattering.
It is one of the oldest zoological myths in the English language: bats are blind. The truth is the opposite — most bats see quite well, fruit bats rely heavily on sight and smell, and some species even see ultraviolet light. ProofNews traces where the myth came from and what the science really says.
The viral claim that chocolate causes acne contains a grain of truth — small trials show cocoa can worsen breakouts in acne-prone people. But dermatologists say the strongest dietary evidence points at high-glycemic foods and dairy, not cocoa itself.
Millions of us ritualistically swipe away background apps to 'save battery.' But Apple and Google engineers have said for years that force-quitting does nothing for battery life — and can make it worse.
Apple once advertised that Macs 'don't get PC viruses.' Two decades later, infostealers, backdoors, and phishing are hitting macOS in record numbers. We examined the history, the threat data, and Apple's own admissions — here is the verdict.
Every schoolyard has heard the story: daddy longlegs carry the deadliest venom of any spider, but their fangs are too small to bite us. We investigated the biology, the bite tests, and the scientists who debunked it — and found the claim is wrong in almost every way it can be wrong.
Doctors have known for decades that antibiotics can't touch a virus, yet prescriptions for colds and flu keep flowing. We dig into the clinical trials, the resistance toll, and the real reasons the pills get handed out — and the answer is unambiguous.
Raw milk influencers say it beats pasteurized milk on nutrition and can cure everything from asthma to lactose intolerance. The science says the nutrition claims are myths, the asthma link is an unproven correlation, and the pathogen risk is very real.
Viral posts say adult humans were never meant to drink milk — pointing to lactose intolerance rates and a landmark Harvard review. We checked the evidence: milk is optional, not poison, and the real answer is more nuanced than the meme.
The claim that Bitcoin and other cryptocurrencies move money invisibly has survived for over a decade. But a trail of seized fortunes, convicted mixers and a forensic industry built to read blockchains tells a different story.
